Week May 11th – 15th

MONDAY

Objective: Classify substances as acids or bases according to the Arrhenius, Brönsted-Lowry, or Lewis definitions. List the general properties of acids, bases and salts. Classify a solution as acidic, basic or neutral when given its pH, its pOH, its concentration of hydroxide ions, or its concentration of hydronium ions.

Pages: 389 - 397

Assignment: Discuss the following topics:

Arrhenius definitions: H+ and OH- Ions.

Lewis Definitions: Electron pairs.
Observable properties of acids and bases.
Equilibria, Acids, and Bases.
The pH scale.

Homework: Answer Section Review Questions 15A. Write ten lines about “When the weather turns sour”, page 395.

TUESDAY

Objective: Convert between the pH, pOH, [H3O+], and [OH-] for solutions. When given the structural formulas of pair of acids identify the stronger acid and explain why it is the stronger.

Assignment: Discuss the following topics:

pH and pOH calculations.
Describing Acid-Base Strengths: Equilibrium Constants.
Causes of Acid-Base Strengths.
It’s an acid, it’s a base, it’s amphiprotic.
Polyprotic acids.
Indicators: Color coded chemicals.

Homework: Answer Section Review Questions 15B.

WEDNESDAY

Objective: Complete equations for neutralization reactions between acids and bases. Calculate the concentration of a solution when given data from an appropriate acid-base titration. Explain how a buffer system works.
